Talk Description:
“Sex” and “gender” may have distinct definitions, but for humans “in the wild,” sex- and gender-related contributors to behavior are often highly enmeshed, raising important questions about their empirical investigation. The goal of this presentation is to illustrate ways to operationalize gender- and sex-related factors in behavioral neuroendocrine research, and to examine their co-occurring influences on spatial skills and depressive symptomatology. Specifically, findings will be shared from a series of studies on pubertal timing and oral contraceptive use in which self-perceptions of masculinity and femininity were also considered. The presentation will close by emphasizing that a personalized approach is among the only plausible ways to understand the intricate ways in which sex-related characteristics, such as gonadal hormones, and gender-related experiences combine to matter for the psychological wellbeing of unique individuals.
